"I Love Ozempic"- The Growing Phenomenon of Weight Loss

Recently, there has been an uprise of people taking ozempic, a drug for those with diabetes, for quick and efficient weight loss. The trend has spread rapidly through Tiktok and Instagram, and many celebrities (such as Ice Spice) have been accused of taking it.

The issue with ozempic stems from a deeper issue- the growing trend of what's considered "in" and "out" in terms of body types. The increasing pressure from society to lose weight is at the expense of those who need medication to survive. According to CNN, the price of ozempic has shot up by 3.5%.

Berlin-based designer Namilia highlights this hot topic with her SS25 runway: she crafts clothes that highlight the irony of the media and criticizes the trend of body types within society. Her fashion runway show is similar to AVAVAV's runway show covered a while ago- her articles of clothing makes a statement.

As can be seen on the left, the woman's clothes are filled with internet microtrends. The shirt itself is a late microtrend past its expiration date, and the skirt resembles the 2021-2022 trend of long white flowy skirts.

Namilia's work of this piece is chock-full of criticism of the fashion and weight trends influenced by social media and acts as a form of social artwork- not meant to be worn, but to send a message to the viewers.

I think that this message was a slap in the face to modeling agencies and designers, who are constantly pushing a "skinny is the ultimate" mindset for models and girls. It's irony that the runway around them, more likely than not filled with girls who are pressured to lose weight, displays a darker side of the fashion industry that most choose to ignore.
